33 New Things: Watch ‘The Godfather’

I rang in 2012 by jumping into a frozen lake and then watching a violent three-hour movie about gangsters. And both were awesome!
In the event that you’ve been living under a rock (like me) The Godfather is the story of an Italian crime family headed by Vito Corleone. The family makes its money dealing in gambling, alcohol and sex workers, but they’re loosing their stronghold because Vito isn’t interested in expanding their holdings to include narcotics. Vito’s youngest son Michael is an ivy league graduate and decorated war hero who has no interest in the family business, but when a rival mobster has Vito gunned down while he’s buying oranges, Michael decides to step up.
The movie includes Everyone Famous Ever (Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Al Pacino, James Caan and Diane Keaton) and it’s worth watching just for young Mr. Pacino’s lips and heavy-lidded eyes. Watching his character morph from an uninvolved, idealistic college boy to hardened, crafty godfather is unnerving and un-look-away-able. I guess The Academy probably knew what they were doing when they gave this movie the Best Picture Oscar in 1972. I guess.
Have you seen The Godfather? What other classics do you love?

I've read the book of The Godfather but I'm not sure I've seen the whole film.

I like The Great Escape and Gone With The Wind amongst others.

Oh my goodness …you're one of those who can get themselves to enter a cold body of water on New Years day! This always sounds like a fun thing to do but not something I could ever talk myself into!

I have never seen The Godfather but it has stood the test of time so well that it's something I should do.

I watched all three movies when I was in my mid-teens, still own the VHS copies, and just got the DVDs for Christmas. My husband and I are planning to reinstate his old buddies' tradition of having a Godfather-watching party every year. You get together, watch all three movies, eat steak and pasta, smoke cigars, and drink scotch. :3

It's been a while since I've seen the Godfather, but I prefer the black and white classics like Casablanca and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

Hah, I only saw The Godfather 2 years ago (I'm 27) and I felt like I was the only adult in the world who hadn't seen it. Part of the reason I didn't watch it for years was because everyone I knew had already seen it and didn't want to watch it again… in the end my brother and I watched the first 3 movies (he hadn't seen them either) and now love to drop in casual Godfather references when we talk to each other, all casual like… I always feel extra cultured when the film comes up in conversation and I can do that now! Lame right!

I've never seen the Godfather. I'm kind of like Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail – what's the big deal with The Godfather? Lol. I guess I'd have to watch it sometime to find out.

I watched The Godfather for a film and class and I'm glad I did – if only for the famous scene with the horse head. Classics I love are Chinatown, Roman Holiday, and Sunset Boulevard.

this is one of my favorite movies, I love mob dramas. Also, this reminds me that I think you should do a true life interview with a female corrections officer working in a men's max security prison

Haha, does it count if you fell asleep? That was a fun day though 😉
